What is DHI Hair Transplantation?

What is DHI Hair Transplantation?

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), also known as Direct Hair Transplantation, is a hair restoration technique where hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and implanted into the recipient area using a specialized tool called the Choi pen. Unlike traditional hair transplant methods, DHI does not require any incisions or stitches.

In Turkey, particularly in Istanbul, which is known as a hub for medical tourism, DHI hair transplantation is becoming increasingly popular. Many clinics in Istanbul offer DHI hair transplantation services, including the sapphire DHI technique, which uses a sapphire blade to create implantation channels instead of a metal blade.

Before undergoing DHI hair transplantation in Turkey, patients typically attend a consultation session with a hair transplant specialist who will evaluate their hair loss patterns and determine the number of hair follicles needed for transplantation. The specialist explains the DHI hair transplantation procedure and provides before-and-after photos to help the patient understand the expected results.

After the procedure, patients may start to see results within 3-6 months, with full growth typically occurring within 12-18 months. DHI hair transplantation is a minimally invasive procedure with minimal downtime, and patients can usually return to their daily activities within a few days. However, following the post-operative instructions provided by the clinic is essential to achieve optimal results.

DHI Hair Transplantation Stages:

Precise Graft Harvesting

Following the application of local anesthesia, a specialist surgeon carefully harvests hair follicles from the donor area (typically the back of the scalp). During this stage, a specialized device called a "micromotor" with micro-tipped ends is used to prevent damage to the hair follicles. The micro-tips can have a diameter ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 mm. The harvested hair follicles are in the form of individual follicular units.

Soaking in Nutrient Solution

The harvested follicular units are soaked in a special solution to preserve their vitality and protect them from external factors. This nutrient solution ensures that they are stored under optimal conditions until the transplantation procedure. The duration of soaking in the solution is crucial for maintaining the health of the hair follicles.

Direct Implantation with Choi Pen

The "Choi Pen," which is the hallmark of the DHI technique, comes into play. This pen individually extracts each hair follicle and places it in the target area according to the natural growth direction and angle of the hair. When the DHI hair transplantation procedure is completed, the implanted hair follicles are positioned according to the natural direction of hair growth. As a result, the transplanted hair achieves a natural appearance, appearing as if it has never been lost.

What is a Choi pen implanter?

Choi Implanter, a small device used during the hair transplantation procedure to implant hair follicles into the recipient area. This device allows the surgeon to make small incisions in the scalp and then delicately and precisely place the hair follicles into these incisions.

The Choi Implanter is a popular choice among hair transplant surgeons because it speeds up the process of follicle implantation and reduces the risk of damage to the follicles during implantation. Additionally, it is expected to achieve a more natural-looking hairline due to the device providing more control over the direction and angle of the implanted hair.

What are the advantages of DHI Hair Transplant Method compared to other methods?

The choice of hair transplantation technique depends on various factors such as the required number of grafts, cost, recovery time, and more. Therefore, when comparing DHI to Sapphire FUE, it wouldn’t be accurate to say that one method is definitely superior to the other. It’s also important to note that many centers adopting the FUE technique may use different tools that can affect the outcomes. In the most advanced version of FUE, which is Sapphire FUE, sapphire tips are preferred for creating incisions.

These sapphire tips leave fewer scars compared to traditional steel blade FUE methods, resulting in a more natural appearance of the hair. In DHI, on the other hand, a tool called the CHOI pen is used instead of a blade. The key difference between the two methods is that in DHI, the incision process is performed immediately after the extraction phase as part of the hair transplantation procedure. However, if a person requires more than 4000 grafts, DHI cannot be applied in a single session. One of the biggest advantages of DHI is its shorter recovery time and lack of scarring. With Sapphire FUE, if the donor area permits, more grafts can be applied.

When hair transplantation is performed using the DHI method, the recovery process is quick compared to other methods, and patients can return to their normal lives in a short period. The transplanted hair starts to fall out within the first two weeks, and new hair begins to grow from the third month, yielding pleasing results. However, the actual results become apparent after six months. To better understand the effects of DHI hair transplantation, you can examine before and after photos.
